On November 5th, 2025, two temporary crosswalks with painted curb extensions were installed on Riviera Drive in Pennsville, New Jersey. These new safety measures, installed by Cross County Connection Transportation Management Association staff and Pennsville municipal staff, are being tested as part of South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization’s Complete Streets Technical Assistance Program. This program supports the efforts of municipalities in the southern part of the state by providing technical assistance to develop temporary demonstration projects, bicycle network plans, and Complete Streets policies. Demonstration projects provide a means for municipalities to test out safety improvements and conduct public engagement to further their Complete Streets goals.

Pennsville was one of three towns selected as part of the first round of the program. The Township expressed interest in improving bicycle connectivity along the waterfront and coordinated with the project team to address safety issues on Riviera Drive. The team selected a design concept that included curb extensions, crosswalks, and flexible delineator posts. All materials used can easily be removed when the temporary demonstration project ends or they can remain in place if Pennsville determines that the safety features should stay.

To measure the success of this demonstration project in improving safety, the project team has provided an online questionnaire for public feedback. The questionnaire was shared on social media and was also placed on a flyer near the demonstration project to ensure broad access by residents. The team will also conduct a speed study. Next year, they will present a plan with long-term recommendations to improve safety and provide Pennsville with improved bicycling connectivity.
