On Sunday, October 6, thousands of New Brunswick residents and visitors took to the streets in the city’s first-ever Ciclovia. A 3.4 mile route through the heart of the city was closed to car traffic in order to give the community the opportunity to walk, bike, skate, run, and take fitness classes in the streets.

The New Brunswick Ciclovia was the largest event of its kind in New Jersey and attracted a wide range of participants. Some simply exited their apartment onto the welcoming streets, while others came from around the state.

Our own Charles Brown, MPA, Program Manager of the New Jersey Bicycle and Pedestrian Resource Center, was a member of the advisory committee which developed the goals and strategies that guided the event.  Ambassadors pitched in by assisting the research efforts led by the Voorhees Transportation Center, distributing survey materials to event participants.

The New Brunswick Ciclovia is a cooperative project of the City of New Brunswick, New Brunswick Tomorrow, Johnson & Johnson and Rutgers University. The project was awarded a Local Government Capacity Grant from Together North Jersey. The organizers of the New Brunswick Ciclovia hope it will become an annual event that can be easily replicated by other communities in New Jersey.
